re...

Ah thats what it is....

April 20th. Called 420 day by stoners because April is the 4th month of the year, making the date 4/20. Just like the hour 4:20, it is used as an excuse to get together and get stoned (like one needs an excuse for that).

I read a long article in the LA Times many years ago about these kids (now adults) who claim they started the 4:20 thing. Who knows where it really comes from......

I found a quarter of medium grade Moroccan hashish in a record shop. It was all loose and in lumps in.....

the Jimi Hendrix stack.

I thought it was stones at first.

I deduced romantically that it must surely have belonged to the church of the ever lasting rainbow electric thingummy Jimi and was sacrament, y'know.

Aaaaaaammmmmmmaaaaaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing.

Some unlucky pop picker might have just lost his stash though, but it seems unlikely...seeing as it was loose.

It made my day and I've been boring people with the story ever since.

The alternative to that was to post a long lyrical thing on how wonderful hashish used to be etc when I was young...

I could send you a picture instead...

And we could pretend that we were reading "High TImes."

I wish Amsterdam was close enough to be a weekend destination like Vegas is for us.

Vegas should be a "pot-legal" zone.... practically everything else goes there.....

I had never thought to compare it with Amsterdam.

I have never been to either, I had an afternoon in a Maastricht coffeeshop once in South Holland. Shmoked shome nice skonk weed and then got the train back to Aachen in Germany. It were great.

Shloe.

Good Queen Bess Elizabeth I reigned in Ingerland when Scotland had it's own monarch. This was before the Union of the Crowns 1603 with Jamie the saxt (sixth) o' Scotland or James the 1st of Ingerland

The Parliaments united in 1707.

Technically the current HM. Queen Elizabeth II is therefore, Scotland's Queen Elizabeth I.

But history isn't all Kings and Queens and mad parades.

I understand that the latest rough guide to England says that it is obsessed with football, celebrities and television but it does say some nice things about afternoon tea.

I'll assume that you aren't just taking the piss and answer.

If beans of the baked variety was all there was in the house for brekkie I'm sure I would eat beans. They are great on toast.

Beans beans are good for your heart, the more you eat the more you fart etc.

Well you might get them in a greasy spoon as part of a full English or Scottish breakfast. Fried eggs, sausage, mushrooms, fried bacon, fried bread, fried tomatoes, the fry-up. Mebbe eat that once in a while though cholestrol!!!

Brits do eat a lot of beans yeh.

But they also eat Kellog's cornflakes and porridge and cereals generally in a more conventional regular sense.

Haggis? Yeah some people actually loathe it - prissy ones usually IMHO but you can get a Vegetarian haggis too which is ok really

Best is the authentic. You can get it battered round the corner at the chip shop. McSweens of Edinburgh I would say tdo the best Haggis and it is available for export so you could get some of that. :-)

I'm sure I've posted this before or something similar.

here Ill prove it...one me fav's 'o' the bard

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,--
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

You know we Brits use a lot of irony apparently.

I think like everything the truth is somewhere in the middle.

It is also true that our accents and vocabulary stamp our identity like a brand.

Our town centres have it is true become "identikit retail parks" which is a shame. But apart from being addicted to telly, celebrity obsessed and the sex thing, there are some pleasanter aspects. Castles are pretty good I suppose. We are generous when it comes to charity, we love animals, creativity and individuality flourish and we couldn't live without BBC Radio 4. All facts taken from rough guide to England.

I just wasn't sure about those beans and the haggi. Then typing up the components of that Great British Fry-up made me feel hungry and I forgot to mention tattie scones.

The cuisine is improving, we no longer boil our vegetables into soggy submission.

Hands across the ocean eh? I've got to say Shloe that I do like them colours you are flying.

You'll have to visit the place or get yourself into Oxbridge or something. So which bit would you want to see and if you say "London, England" try not to, just London will do.

Our public transport is generally piss-poor though. The continent (Europe) seem to have got it right there. We haven't. It is probably the worst in Europe and over priced particularly our railway network. We had a fine network that served many places but these were mostly considered unprofitable back waters and so the track was torn up and housing estates were built instead. Lack of foresight.

Mebbe you might want to read Bill Bryson's "notes from a small island."

This from a wiki on the subject:

"The book, published in 1995, is often regarded as being the book that best describes British culture and British people. In it, he expressed amazement at the heritage in Britain, stating that there are (or were at the time of writing) 445,000 listed buildings, 12,000 medieval churches, 1,500,000 acres of common land, 120,000 miles of footpaths, and public rights-of-way, 600,000 known sites of archaeological interest and that in his Yorkshire village at that time, there were more 17th-century buildings than in the whole of North America."

ISBN 0552996009

Thanks for the Shakespeare!

I haven't actually read "Richard II"...I got it from the 1930's movie
"The Scarlet Pimpernel"...love it!

They seek him here.
They seek him there.
Those Frenchies seek him every where.
Is he in heaven?
Or is he in hell?
That damnned elusive Pimpernel!
