Could there be an outside entity directing the spammers here? Could it be a disgruntled user or ex-user of the board???

it would be nice to blame it on someone who has been banned from here
but I think the root of the problem is the easy sign-up.... on most boards I belong to, you have to be approved by the Mod before you can post.... so the Mods can delete bogus profiles before they have a chance to start spamming.
