We're on the other side of the world, and events here in recent days have certainly turned upside down from what we expected. A few days ago, we received a radio distress call from the very whaling fleet we were seeking, requesting assistance as a result of an onboard fire. We sped directly to the coordinates that were issued. The scene we arrived at was quite serious indeed: the whaling factory ship Nisshin Maru, the largest vessel in the whaling fleet, had suffered a serious fire. Sadly, as a result of the fire, one of the crew of the Nisshin Maru was fatally injured. Our condolences go to his wife and family at this difficult time.
The waters of the Southern Ocean are some of the most dangerous on Earth, and our focus must now turn to preventing further tragedies - human and environmental. Since reaching the site where the Nisshin Maru sits disabled in the water, we have been sending our helicopter, Tweety, up to survey the forming ice at regular intervals. The situation is perilous. A shift in the winds could easily draw the disabled whaling ship further into the ice, and towards an impending environmental catastophe. An oil spill here, in the pristine waters of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, would truly be a disaster.
I've had first-hand experience with oil spills in Alaska, and the crew and I will do everything we can to avoid such a tragedy here. That's why we've made several offers to assist the Japanese government by towing the disabled Nisshin Maru out of the area. Our captain, Frank Kamp, has ten years experience working on salvage vessels. The Esperanza is the most able of vessels in the area, and our crew is willing and able to lend a hand. But so far, Tokyo has refused our offer.

The situation here is urgent. Please, help put pressure on the Japanese government to do the right thing, and allow us to tow the Nisshin Maru out of the waters of Antarctica.
Thanks to so many of you, we were able to be here, ready to place ourselves between the harpoons and the whales. This whaling season may well be over, but our journey to defend the whales in 2007, is just beginning. I hope you will remain a dedicated part of our crew as we sail into the choppy political waters of the next meeting of the International Whaling Commission in Anchorage, Alaska in May.
We'll travel to the ends of the Earth to defend the whales. I hope I can count on you to do your part to defend the whales along with us
