Is Indie Really Indie?

Post by obiwankobe »

I'm starting to think Inide really isn't so indie afterall. First of all most of the stuff they play is on major labels, or secretly owned by a major label. Secondly I have DirecTV and they have music / radio "channels", and they play the same exact stuff Indie does. Guess what the name of the channel is ? Alternative. Also have you noticed how every new band is an "indie" band. That's all the music reviews say-new indie band. Also if you read the LA Times once a week there is a cover story on "indie" music or a new "indie" band. If you want to take a look at http://www.pitchforkmedia.com, it was the subject of a story in the Calendar session last week. Don't get me wrong I like "indie" music or what ever you want to call it. I'm just saying is the last successful money making endevor any of the major labels had was in the early mid-90's with "Alternative" & "Brit Pop". I am more inclined to label Indie 103.1 an "Alternative" music station. An example of a pure play "indie" channel is KCRW.
Mind you ALL I am talking about is the music, not the specialty shows, i.e. Jonesy.
I'm just curious if anyone else is seeing this "indie" movement already starting to break into the main stream.
I mean, I watched some of the PAC-10 (Men's College Basketball) Tournament last week and they are previewing the games with The Zutons "Pressure Point" & going to commercial with The Bravery "Honest Mistake".
Just curious as to what you think?

p.s.
Here's my business plan for Clear Channel by the way. Sell KROQ, bring Kevin & Bean to Indie 103.1 and use all their cash to promote it. They'd make a killing. Not that I want that to happen but if it was up to me to try to make money off of a radio station that's what I would do.

Clearly Indie are a corporate station and I don't think that claim not to be. They sell advertising don't they? Indie pop/indie rock although used to refer to non main stream bands/labels has been produced by major labels or pseudo indie labels for years. It's no secret.

Ask the Cure. Clash, Sex Pistols. The list goes on.

To me it is the integrity of the music not so much as who produces ir as long as the bands are treated failry. :o

Problem is that Viacom own KROQ not Clear Channels.

Replay

Post by robert »

The more i think about it the more i believe that this station has too many "regular station" leanings. The replay of major label stuff. I have requested the Vandals a ton of times, but never have i heard them on indie.

But the thing that puts me over the edge is the constant replay. I repsect what Mike Steele has done, but his pop background is prevelent in the amount of play and replay that most songs get. Diversity is the key. More variety. Please

I was thinking the other day...ok...you can clean your collective monitors now...I should have warned you all before I said that and you took a sip of your sodas....anyway.....I was wondring if the djs KNOW that there are other Stiff Little Fingers and XRay Spec songs...don't get me wrong, I love Alternative Ulster and Oh Bondage! Up Yours, but the other songs on both of those CDs are great as well...Nobody's Hero....Barbed Wire Love....White Noise....I Am a Poseur...the Day the World Turned Day Glow...etc etc etc.....

Indie's Playlist

Post by MicheBel »

Yeah, but remember, they are walking a fine line right now. And especially in this transition moment, they have to look all corporate friendly and nice for advertisers. They still play enough diversity to keep me happy most days.

I honestly don't see any of other songs that I mentioned even vaguley dangerous. I suppose the listening audience has grown accustomed to them making them safer and I am all for protecting the station, I just like the whole "flying without a net" feeling.

It works fine, you just need to make sure the brackets line up.

Repetition

Post by MicheBel »

Anyone who thinks Indie is a "corporate" radio station really hasn't been listening to actual corporate radio much.

Sure Indie plays some songs over and over. Like what's on right now: Riot Radio. They could play this 80 times a day, and I wouldn't get sick of it.

Remember, please, back in the days when radio was good, the whole repetition thing was created to get people accustomed to new music enough that they'd want to buy it. I see nothing wrong with that.

As much as they've played some songs (I Predict a Riot) past their welcome, there are others (Common People) that I wished they hadn't pulled so soon. All in all, Indie rocks in a way no other station (except maybe 94.9) does.

I love/adore Common People! I burned a copy of it straight away! Got it in my car and the office, on two separate CDs.
