They recorded it as part of the CD - Instant Karma: The Campaign To Save Darfur, proceeds from which help support Amnesty International's campaign to focus attention on the urgent catastrophe in Darfur, Sudan.
Other artists covering Lennon songs on the cd are U2, Jackson Browne, Aerosmith, Jack Johnson, Flaming Lips, R.E.M. (#9 Dream) & a bunch of pop artists. The video features statements by Darfur survivors. So you can forgive Green Day for taking some liberties with the song when it is for a good cause. I'm sure some of the versions on the album are much worse. I've heard REM's #9 Dream & I like it too.

I concur. I haven't heard it yet, but I am a big Green Day fan and of course Lennon is a legend. But if it doesn't sound up to par, at least it's for a good cause. I'm anxious/curious to hear what the next album will sound like. It will only be the follow up to the multi-platinum, Grammy award-winning American Idiot. No pressure. Ha
