Autopsy planned; fight over woman

An autopsy was planned Tuesday to determine what killed a Snellville man who died after being head-butted during a fight with a man with no arms.

No charges were immediately filed in the incident.

Snellville police Chief Roy Whitehead said Charles Keith Teer and William Russell Redfern, who had been in an ongoing dispute over a woman, scuffled Monday afternoon in the driveway of a home on Pine Street in the Gwinnett County town.

"There was somebody between them trying to separate them and the fight occurred around the witness," Whitehead said.

Teer's sister, Sandra Teer Elliott, said Teer lived with her at the Pine Street address. She said the dispute involved a woman who lives across the street and previously dated her brother but now dates Redfern.

She said her brother had been calling the woman about getting a piece of furniture back and that, Monday afternoon, an altercation between Teer and Redfern broke out. After an initial exchange of blows, the men separated but Redfern saw that his girlfriend had been knocked down in the scuffle, Teer Elliott said. He ran back across the street and head-butted Teer, she added.

"That's what we understand at this point," said Whitehead.

After being head-butted, Teer complained of being dizzy, "and then he collapsed. He was dead on the scene," Whitehead said.

He said that after the fight, Redfern and the woman got into Redfern's truck and drove to the Snellville police station.

"They were calling us," Whitehead said. "He was going to call to report the dispute, and then when [Teer] collapsed, they told 911 they needed EMS."

Whitehead said investigators were awaiting autopsy results before deciding on whether to file charges against Redfern.

Known as "Rusty," Redfern had gained some notoriety for his ability to function fully.

Redfern, in his mid-40s, was born with no right arm and only a short stump for a left arm but became an artist whose pen-and-ink drawings were the underpinning for a greeting card business in the mid-90s, according to a 1995 article in the AJC.

His artwork has been exhibited at numerous arts festivals, including the Powers' Crossroads Country Fair & Arts Festival.

Redfern had visited schools and hospitals in the past to demonstrate how he developed his talents to triumph over a potential disability.
