Radiohead, Bloc Party Head New War Child Comp

Jessica Suarez reports:
It'll be 10 years ago next month that Britain's most popular musicians entered recording studios around Europe to each record a track within 24 hours and have the entire CD mastered, pressed, and in stores within a week. That CD, entitled Help, went to #1 on the UK charts and put thousands into the hands of War Child, a charity established in 1993 for victims of the war in Bosnia. The album's quick recording also proved that if your favorite band is spending more than a year on their next album, they're taking too long (Brian Wilson, Axl Rose, take note).

Help: A Day in the Life, will commemorate the 10th anniversary of that project by repeating the whole thing, but with an (almost) entirely new set of British bands. In fact, so far Radiohead, Damon Albarn (first as a solo artist; this time with Gorillaz), and Manic Street Preachers are the only repeat performers, proving once again that Radiohead can outlast war, famine, and maybe even the apocalypse. Other bands confirmed for the project include Bloc Party, Hard-Fi, Razorlight, the Coral, Elbow, Mylo, the Zutons, Maxïmo Park and the Magic Numbers, who will be contributing a cover of Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".

Also, shit is going down in many parts of the world right now, so while the original CD only benefited children in Sarajevo, this album will also raise funds for war victims in Iraq, Afganistan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Help: A Day in the Life will be recorded Sept 8, available from the War Child Music website Sept 9, and in stores a few weeks after.
