Dead Kennedys Just Say No to Coors, DARE Program a Success!

Post by Glenn »

The Dead Kennedys have recently out-punked themselves by pulling out of an upcoming October 29th Coors-sponsored event in Los Angeles, titled Walking the Dead. Scheduled to appear alongside The Germs, Suicidal Tendencies, Flipper, and Marky Ramone, the DK's cited the Coors Brewing Company's right-wing history of support, anti-union leanings, and a middle finger to environmental causes as reasons for the departure. Having not been informed of the Coors sponsorship, guitarist East Bay Ray stated, "Dead Kennedys have always been wary of corporate sponsorship and steer clear of lending our name to promote a product. Because we were not alerted to the ultra-conservative, right-wing sponsor for this event, we could not see a reason to go ahead and perform at this show in good conscience." Take that Coors! What watered down, generic statement do you have to offer now?

"At Coors, we are proud of our corporate social performance record and progress. We have long been honored by national organizations and publications for our progressive policies, business practices, and community support." Coors should have then added. "Plus we really just want to keep people fucked up and making out. If the Dead Kennedys have a problem with getting f'd and making out then we say, whatevs Dead Kennedys, whatevs."

The Dead Kennedys have apologized to their Los Angles area fans and have promised shows in the near future. In the meantime, you can always pick up the DK's soon to be re-released 1980 debut, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, due out October 25th on Manifesto Records. And, if you can't get rid of that captain's itch for a live show, a bonus DVD will feature archived footage of the band with original lead singer Jello Biafra, as well as a nice little documentary about making the album and the horrible practice of juggling kittens. They're kittens for cheesecake's sake, kittens.
