I didn't listen to Jonesy today, but that part of the lyrics really doesn't help. The closest thing I could think of was Men at Work, "You can dance if you want".

Actually it's from Men Without Hats and the song is The Safety Dance

"...we can dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind, cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance, then they're no friends of mine..."

anyone know where i can get the dodgy bird song, i'm not sure who sings it, but its one of those obscure english songs and the lyrics go:"you're a dodgy bird but i love you. you're a dodgy bird but i need you. you're a dodgy bird and i'm a dodgy bloke.... etc."

i'd appreciate any feedback

Yeah, I guess that streaming audio technology just isn't quite there yet. I'm amazed how many hiccups I get with the multitude of browsers I use to connect to Indie. But when I use the link you gave, it just streams right along.

It's the first Windows thing on my machine that I've actually looked forward to using. Now if only they could set up the stream through Quick Time or iTunes, I'd be really happy. Wink

Thanks again!

I just don't understand why anyone would do something like that. I think the club really screwed up though. Usually when a Record act is playing they check you at the door. I am just glad the cop got him.

I have all their albums. They will never go away........

The reverend he turned to me
Without a tear in his eyes
It's nothing new for him to see
I didn't ask him why
I will remember
The love our souls had
Sworn to make
Now I watch the falling rain
All my mind can see
Now is your face

Well I guess
You took my youth
I gave it all away
Like the birth of a
New found joy
This love would end in rage
And when she died
I couldn't cry
The pride within my soul
You left me incomplete
All alone as the
Memories now unfold

CHORUS:
Believe the word
I will unlock my door
And pass the
Cemetary gates

Sometimes when I'm alone
I wonder aloud
If you're watching over me
Some place far aboud
I must reverse my life
I can't live in the past
Then set my soul free
Belong to me at last
Through all those
Complex years
I thought I was alone
I didn't care to look around
And make this world my own
And when she died
I should've cried and spared myself some pain...
Left me incomplete
All alone as the memories still remain

and how unfortunate that so many people will just push it aside since he went by Dimebag... i already have friends that didn't know his name assume he was just another "gangsta rapper"...

I think indie should play an extra pantera song or two today for sure

Damn, and I was just listening to an old Deftones CD and wanted to request "dai the flu" because this band deserves radio play!

I've been meaning to post this myself. I live in Huntington Beach, work in Anaheim, and the last couple of weeks or so the Indie signal has been horrendous. Sometimes there's so much static that the song starts breaking up.

I was wondering the same thing about the Newport Beach station.

Well I have noticed the downgrade of the signal in OC, but in LA county it seems to have increased, especially in the San Gabriel valley.

Hopefully all of LA and Orange counties get a better signal so more listeners can tune in. That'll definitely boost Indie's current rating, which is lagging way down.

I like that song too. I was shocked to hear it on Indie cause it was only a few months ago when I heard of it from elsewhere and then BAM indie played it. Only if they could play it a bit more.

Anyway, it's by a band called Mynx. Their video for that song is funny.

I was listening to Passport Approved this past Saturday morning and they played a song.. I know it was foreign, obviously, and it sounded like a black singer. The lyrics to the chorus were along the lines of "Bawitdaba" by Kid Rock.

Something like "I'm the bomb-da-bomb-da-bang-a-dang-diggy-diggy" .. They mentioned the name but said it so fast I have no idea. Any one know?

Once they post the playlist for last weekend's show I'll know for sure but they haven't updated it yet.

actually clearchannel does own them along with some other big company...there's a link to an article on the website and you can read all about it. and while i understand the sentiment that indie is sacred, there's not too much they can do if nobody is listening...you can't stay in business without an audience (and a bigger audience than they've got now). there are a lot of people who would like the music if they heard it but they've just grown up on crap and don't realize it. i'm a walking advertisement for
indie, and i've converted a great many kroq listeners.

I think that article needs to do some fact checking.

Indie is owned by Entravision, who has owned the radio station 103.1 for years. You can check Entravision's site showing they own Indie. How Clear Channel is involved with Indie, is through a Joint Sales Agreement (JSA). CC sells advertising space for Indie. CC can not run another radio station in LA due to FCC regulations for the LA area.

How the JSA came to be, through what radio people are talking about, is that CC wanted to capture some of the audience from that dance format on KDL (the party station, HA!) in order to boost ratings for KISS fm since they would tend to play some of the same dance music here and there. Also a JSA with CC is a good idea for Entravision since it generates a steady stream of revenue.

The JSA is only short term, so that means CC probably will not renew it since they got what they wanted out of it. Why do you think Indie has been placing ads here and there asking if anyone wants to advertise on Indie for 30 second spots? They need advertisers to satisfy Entravision and better ratings, or else it's another switch for 103.1. And I DO NOT want another Spanish radio station...grr Indie's recent ratings score is very low at the moment....

So the more listeners we get for Inide, the better! I'm glad Johnnysled is promiting Indie in his own way. =)

So to everyone else, keep on telling people about Indie and show those stickers off proudly!

regardless of where the money is coming from and "how indie" some people want indie to be, they're playing the music I want to hear, and over the years we have all seen some of our favorite bands disappear because they werent making the money or getting the listeners needed to survive...

I say let some wankers listen if it helps keep the music I want to hear on the radio, just don't let them influence whats being played

and anyone that won't listen because indie is "corporate" should know that the indie currently runs on less money then some of the public radio in the area (i had this discussion with a couple people)

long live indie!

Hey! I think it's great thay you do all you can to support your
favorite station... Me too! I sent out a link to everyone on my list
so they could listen in online... I love the Indie!!! So I was
thinking as I was reading the post from the person who was
complaining about Indie getting bigger. Think about this... No
listeners = no advertisers = no money for the station and WHAM! Gone!
That would suck, right? Then there's the issue about posers... well
how do you decide who's really a poser? What if WE (2 presumably uber
cool people) met and thought each other were - would we both need to
stop listening to the station then? (I know that's not what was
meant, but do you see my point?) Even the biggest dweeb out there has
someone who thinks they're cool, so if they happen to have only one
thing going for them ( good taste in music) more power to them! Ya
know... most dweebs hang out in packs anyway, don't they? HAH! MORE
LISTENERS! And even if Indie gets huge and everyone and their blue
haired grannies are listening in, that would mean Indie gets POWER...
oh yeah! Power is good when the right people have it, no? 'sides...
TK & Jonesy probably need some new cars and swank pads... right?
heheh! ANYWAY... that's just my opinion. I'm all for promoting this
station and getting as many people to listen in and perhaps
become "enlightened" by excellent music & attitudes that don't suck!

WHEW! I need to lay off the afternoon coffee...

Nah, money won't help Indie get a better tower. Unless you use it to
bribe the FCC. It is mainly FCC regulations that determines a radio
tower's signal strength.

I totally agree power is a great thing when the right folks have it. Well put!! Indie is the cure to the disease that KROQ and mammoth stations of that sort that have infected the airwaves with loop setlists of the same horrible bands playing the same terrible songs 24/7. I believe in this station and its staff whole heartedly that the bigger they get they will hold to the integrity of the great music played.

Think about this has there ever been a station where so many amazing musicians take the time to come in and dj??? Jonesy, Navarro & the Camp Freddy crew, Joe Sib, Courtney Love and the guests that call in or visit is absolutely sick!! No canned interviews either its truly for the love of the music.

Indie must grow in order to survive that is a fact so that whole "sell out" crap save it and get realistic. I highly recommend going to see the bands Indie plays and take a friend or take many friends expose them to new music and it plants the seed to listen and hunger for great music.

Its almost Matrix like in the sense that "the" KROQ has pummeled so many listeners into submission that yes listeners will buy into crap like the Good Charlotte, Hoobastank, Chevelle, Sum 41, etc., etc. it is Indie that is unplugging the b.s. and setting your ears free.

I have turned everyone I know on to Indie and continue to spread the love.I am so ready to help this station succeed in any way I can. Keep raging full on all you Indie fans!

LATE!

I think the song you are inquiring about is the mashup by Go Home Productions called "Rapture Riders" mixing "Rapture" by Blondie and "Riders on the Storm" by the Doors. Here is a link to their site

Tho its of interest that bands that do well on Indie, end up getting airtime within a few months on KROQ too. I'm not saying its a bad thing -- I like the idea that bands that are popular on Indie are getting wider audiences on the ugly mammoth radio station...

So maybe if we get lots of listeners to Indie, other radio stations will have to start playing better music! (well, a girl can dream...)

I agree i am a big fan of Kaiser Chiefs now and to hear them on KROQ, (those times i cant get indie of course) made me really happy because as much as KROQ gets bashed, they do havea bigger audience that will hopefully go buy those albums and make the band a success.

evtually it is all about the music. Think of the hair metal period before grunge broke. Music goes through ups and downs.

missed out on tons of great music because of that. Haven't you heard that spot that
Jonesy does? "An Entravision company"?

<<suddenly the night seemed a little more infinite>>
I can sure relate to that in relation to Indie. Smile

Also, driving like a madwoman because I'm listening to some great song on Indie.

I don't know what she's smokin if she listens to Indie, and comes up with the conclusion that "this is corporate radio."

<<as is the experience of watching friends actually get excited about radio again>>
I can't tell you how many friends I've seen this happen to. They have this bored, dull, listless, automaton look on their face when they talk about radio. I tell them about Indie, and a couple weeks later, they are bouncing around, humming, practically kissing my feet because I told them about Indie. It's great!

<<(It would be great, though, if Indie could get rid of that fake-stoner dude doing the station IDs.)>>
Does she know we live in California? I love that guy! Wink Better than some corporate hot air. It keeps it real.

<<Clear Channel operates 91-X, San Diego's (superior) version of KROQ, which recently took a beating in the ratings from the upstart KBZT-FM 94.9, a station that pioneered a similar format to Indie 103, that is, semi-obscure new shit and a lot of "alternative gold.">>

APPLAUSE! YAY to KBZT! And beating 91X. How funny.

<<People don't demand perfection of their radios: They just want some creativity.>>
Wow. Creativity back in radio. What a concept!

Creativity in radio pretty much sounds like Indie to me! Smile

Get Poorman - he's doing some Bikini Beach t.v show. He's a laugh and a half. Pro indie so I hear. Time for a radio comeback?

If John Peel haden't passed recently I would suggest a syndacation of JP from BBC1. Maybe his replacement? (if there ever could be such a thing)

kroq isn't annoying, its unlistenable. They play all mainstream mainstream stuff, and the bad mainstream ones too! Although, once in a while, they play something decent, but that's only like once every couple hours.

Sluggo was the only one that would blatently say when the music sucked. Maybe thats why they threw him on the 12am-5am shift as a fill-in. If you noticed he would play a set of the "required playlist", go to commercials and comeback with a set of really good stuff, so you could plan on when to tune back in.

See, the next question, (since we are all members of the Street Team here) is how can we grow Indie organically? (Other than turning on everyone we know, which we are probably doing anyway...) How can we help them to get those ratings up? Anyone with any ideas, it would be appreciated. And/or how can we get the stupid ratings companies to COUNT the Internet listeners? I mean, it is a new world here, as far as radio goes.

Let's brainstorm in here about this.

Perhaps some kind of publicity stunt could be in order.

i.e Steve Jones is found naked chained to a ??? somewhere in ??? proclaiming ??? and the press are tipped off.

There may be some arrests but it's all for a good cause. Ratings.

Ah, I've been listening to this DJ from Sydney, AUS on Indie and I've been extremely bored. The music selection has been bad that it reminds me of listening to 98.7. The only thing good out of it was Frank @ 5. Come on DJ Sydney play something better or else Indie needs another DJ, probably from Melbourne.

Subject: Re: Indie for the Masses

Y'know, the only downside I can think of to having so called "poseurs" listening to the station is that I'll have to deal with a bunch of morons when I go see the bands that get airplay on Indie.

But that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make if it means that radio on the whole is going to get better. Hell, I drive in L.A. I'm used to being surrounded by boneheads. Besides, most folks who accuse others of "selling out" because they attain success are losers who will never be successful and insist on keeping everyone else down at their level.

So how do we grow Indie organically? It's been alluded to previously in this thread and it all comes down to the almighty dollar. As passionate as we are about the music, passion doesn't put food on the table and it doesn't keep good radio stations alive. So here's what we can do:

1) Listen to the commercials that run on Indie and patronize the businesses that advertise on the station. Yeah, I know - when the selling starts, that's when you switch to see what's on other stations, pop in a cd or a tape, or simply tune out mentally. I'm guilty of the same, but I'm trying to stop. When you spend money with the businesses that advertise on the station, let them know that you heard about them on Indie.

2) If you own a business with a sound system or a radio, play Indie for your customers. If you work in a business with a sound system or a radio, ask your boss to play Indie for the customers. Sure, odds are that your boss will start yammering on about not wanting to offend older customers, rules for the corporate chain that owns the store, whatever. But you'll never know unless you ask. If you work in an office where you're allowed to listen to music, listen to Indie. Turn your co-workers on to good tunes. They'll thank you for it later. HOWEVER, be diplomatic about it. Some folks are already set in their ways and your proselytizing will only make them hunker down and refuse to hear what you're saying even if they begin to agree. The medium is the message.

3) Are you a business owner? Advertise on the station! You have a small business and don't really have the budget to buy radio time? Talk to other business owners with the same problem and form a co-op type agreement to buy time for the group (if Indie is cool with that.) Believe me, there are enough frustrated writers and producers with home studios in this town that would be happy to create quality ads for you on a shoestring budget or maybe even for barter. Are your parents business owners? Ask them to advertise on Indie or play it at their business.

4) Heck, if you're a kid, ask your parents to tune in to Indie when they're driving you around. You never know, they may hear something they like. And yeah, it might not seem so cool when your parents name drop good bands in front of your friends so they can be the "cool parents," but when you open your Xmas/Hanukkah/Birthday presents, wouldn't it be nice to see the latest from Social D, Secret Machines, Rilo Kiley or whatever they heard you listenining to on Indie instead of socks? Besides, parents are into that whole bonding thing . . . share your music with them.

That's just some of what you can do to spread the word. Think about it - Indie gets the listeners, they get the ratings. They get the ratings, they get the advertisers. They get the advertisers, they get the money - and THAT is what keeps the station alive. Additionally, when they get the ratings, they'll get KROQ's attention and that could only make KROQ want to be more like Indie and then . . . could it be possible that we could wind up with two L.A. commercial radio stations that are truly amazing? Hey, I can hardly believe there's even one in this town.

Keep it up, Indie, and thanks!

And don't forget to tune all the radios to 103.1 next time you shop at a store that sells audio equipment! hehe

Yeah, but that's hokey.

I was thinking about some kind of large demonstration/parade/party to celebrate Indie's one year on the air. Of course, their anniversary is Christmas, so there doesn't seem to be enough time to coordinate that. Wish I'd thought of it sooner.

Just something to show the world at large that there is a mass of people out there who despise radio as usual, and love Indie. And it does seem like it should come from us, not from the station.

Well, Indie already is worldwide. My sister in Germany listens to it online.

Second, I live in Los Angeles, and I can't get a frikkin bumper sticker out of these people. I've even gone to a couple of their events recently, and no luck. They should have some area on their website where people can purchase Indie swag. Have they no marketing department?

Well, I'm pretty darn sure KROQ already has Indie on their radar (just look at how many bands they've poached already).

And I want a Rilo Kiley CD instead of socks this Christmas! ;-)

Good ideas, though.

LOL. That sounds like what I do. I work at a magazine, and every time I go into
a mag store, I put all of our mags in front. ;-)

Great idea, though, Jack. I think I'll start frequenting audio stores just so I can do that!

Indie Magazine or News.

If we could get 100 indie fans to donate $20 that would be $2000. We could produce some type of indie 1031 magazine or newspaper (like NME) using indie music/bands & personalites as the as the center focus. I just made up this number it could be unrealistic. Just b&w to start with maybe color cover.

Distribute magazine to record shop, book shops, coffee shio etc, anywhere some who might like indie would be.

Between everyone we could muster volunteer skills for a typesetter/graphic artist/layout orgainser/chief editor
writers for review & interview
proof reader
(perhaps sell advertising to pay for next issue) salesman
Connection to printer (low cost printing etc)
Distributuion (something anyone can help with)

You figure if 100 people people deliver just to 5 retail shops or drop locations in their area that would be 500 stores that could be.

Just try it once & see what happens. If successful try 3-4 times per year and if it still works move to monthly.

Just give tthe mag to store owner and let them sell for 99 cents to start with so we dont have to worry anout selling to start with. Maybe make some money back on adveritising sales.

Give benefits to the volunteer i,e if you are in band you can plug your band
Low cost advertising if you own company etc.
Maybe indie offer incenticves like gig tickets to volunteers etc.
Editorial freddom for writers
Artistic freedom for artists etc.
Great opportunity for writers to get publiing experience.
Endless opportunity.
Chance to work with other same minded coolk people.

There is probably alot more to it than what is said here but could be a good way to promote indie & start intersting music project of our own. Would be interesred to hear from anyone who has experience in this area.

Pretty much a not for profit grassroots indie magazine in conjunction with the radio,

Ideas?

Um, in short, something like this should come from (and be done by) the station itself. However, they are already a station losing money. Most magazines don't make money for at least two years, so they'd be a losing-money station with a losing-money magazine. Doesn't sound like the best idea in the world. Besides, any info they want people to know about (well, in theory) is/should be posted on their website.

Paper is dead.

And besides all that, you might get people digging on the magazine/articles/whatever. I seriously doubt that a magazine would cause people to LISTEN to the station more.

However, let the record stand that if anyone has any needs regarding print/graphics/proofreading/etc. I am willing and able to donate my skills to the cause of Indie.

Perhaps Fanzine is better word. About indie, created by the community of fans.

The reason paper seems more appealing to me is the fact that indie already have a web-site so it would seem pointless to create another just to echo the same. If you are looking for new ways to attract listeners paper can be placed just about anywhere with the intention of creating curiousty, interest in what indie bands, dj's and the commumity of listners are up to & are interested in. I suppose it's just like leaving a bumper sticker in record store except you are leaving a more indepth perception of what indie is about created by the actual listeners. The more reasons to attract listeners the better.

Of course the idea is to drive new listeners to the radio dial or live stream. Also I do not beleive that paper is dead, its just that there are other alternatives i.e web. You can definately use both to acheive better results than just one or the other.

By the way radio was dead until indie. This is more of a revival.

That seemslike a logical thing + easy to do
I went to their website and got the e-mail.
I guess if enough people let request Indie as an editorial topic that could work.
Maybe write some standard (cut and paste text) so makes easy for listeners to request.

Hi Greg,

I would like to see my favorite radio station Indie 103.1 featured in
Filter Magazine. I am sure that your readers would love to find out
more about the station's music, D.J's personalities and general
impact on the LA music scene. An article on Indie 103.1 would be of
great interest to your readers in Southern California and for those
who live stream from around the world.

This kind of article would certainly prompt me to pick up a copy of
Filter magazine from the newsstand and share with my friends.

Thanks for your consideration.

Well, guess you told me! ;-)

Dude, I'm all for anything which gets Indie more listeners. And, as I've said, if you do get this going, I have an extensive magazine/graphics background, and would happily lend a hand (free of charge) to further the cause of Indie.

That said, I've also been involved with many (too many) magazines/fanzines/film projects which look promising and then go belly up, so I'm kinda sensitive to it.

You find someone else to fund it, and print it, I'll help all I can.

However, it's also true that an "Indie" mag would be infinitely better if people at Indie helped (even getting promo photos or whatnot, things they can't do on the website). THAT would be something worth having.

Lastly, I'm still not convinced that even a great mag would get people to turn their dial to Indie. Prove me wrong.
