White chick Annalee Fery annunciates as preciously as her non-native English-speaking Asian counterparts (e.g. Kazu Makino, Satomi Matsuzaki), tripping cute through quips like "My world came crashing down/ I had to break" and (yes) "No no no no no." "Nobody" shocks though because silver-spoon Echo Park hipsters seldom spew their indie back with so much aplomb. Monsters make moody pop and brood like basic Blonde Redhead, ultra-grandiose choruses and gaspy theatricality and all; "Nobody" careens almost too intensely. Monsters Are Waiting could stand to undergo some maturing, but still: When Fery makes the oft-adolescent claim, "I'm a nobody," she underestimates herself. [Rachel Khong]
