Other Radio Stations (94.9 praising, KROQ bashing)

Post by MicheBel »

Well, I don't have anything specific at the moment, but this is a good ongoing topic. Post here.

Well, other than the fact that Mac users STILL cannot listen to the Webstream of 94.9 (since March 1, 2005 and counting). How lose is that?

How bizarre. Right at this moment, BOTH Indie and 94.9 are playing "Personal Jesus". Did they just pick a pope or something? :o

Hm...I dunno. Personally, I like Indie's playlist better. I've never actually listened to 94.9 - can I even listen to it on the radio? I think it's in San Diego, right? I might try listening at home on their media player some time, but just from the songs you listed, I prefer the songs Indie has in rotation better (and especially the classic gems they'll play like the Clash or Buzzcocks).
But speaking of alternative stations to Indie, I've noticed 93.1 Jack FM (no relation to this Forum) has an ad on the side of a few buses. I saw one last week and it prompted me to check it out since it was also mentioned here a few weeks ago and they were actually playing a good Violent Femmes song. Then I switched back to Indie and haven't been back since. People have said they're just as corporate and play just as many bad songs as KROQ, so I dunno. I did visit their site right now to see if they had an online feature so I could listen at work, but all they have up so far is an email link for comments.
Indie's been around about a year longer than Jack and has been doing what Jack allegedly purports to do...so why doesn't Indie have it's own bus billboard?! lol

Links to 94.9

Post by MicheBel »

Well, Kev, I thought I gave you the link. It's also in the "Links" section. However, since you asked, you can listen to 94.9 if you have a PC. If you have a Mac, at the moment, you are outta luck. But they are supposedly working on that.

Here are the links again:

http://www.fm949sandiego.com/listen/index.cfm

and the main page:

Mhm. I found a link and tried launching the media player before, but unfortunately, like Indie, our company's firewall must prevent it from playing. :( So maybe I'll give it a try at home.

94.9

Post by MicheBel »

Kev--

It's worth it. Indie and 94.9 (were) the only stations I listened to. I got it on my Mac for a blissful couple months.

Supposedly they are getting a Liquid Compass thing like Indie has, or at least something that plays on a Mac. We shall see. It's been down since early March.

Hm, I dunno, though. There were some great songs that you listed off their playlist, but there were also a lot of songs that I've so sick to death of hearing and one of the reasons I stopped listening to KROQ. Lemme comment on a few of them.

3. NIRVANA Heart-Shaped Box

5. NINE INCH NAILS Closer

8. COLDPLAY Clocks

15. AUDIOSLAVE Be Yourself

18. TOOL Stinkfist (SO glad Indie doesn't play Tool)

19. SUBLIME Caress Me Down

25. JET Rollover D.J.

All these songs have been played to death on KROQ, and most of them (with a few exceptions) I never liked in the first place.

The ones I would like hearing though:

1. BLINK-182 M+M's (old Blink. Nice)

11. BECK Jack-Ass

13. THE CURE Pictures of You

14. THE CLASH A Message to You, Rudy

20. OASIS Wonderwall

23. THE SMASHING PUMPKINS Disarm

24. MAZZY STAR Fade Into You

Well, in fairness to Indie, I have heard both Pictures of You and a different version of Wonderwall played even this week.

94.9

Post by obiwankobe »

Looking at the list of songs Miche put up... Obviously he just took some of the top 50 (alternative) songs from 1993-1996. If you like the early to mid 90's music 94.9 is cool. But that is when I grew up and I can sing all those songs backwards, and I have all those CDs, so I don't need to hear that on the radio all day. I think that if there is any station that at times is better than Indie is KCRW. Also KROQ isn't that bad, you just have to know when to change the station. My favorite time to listen to Indie is late on the weekends when they have no DJs, and just let the computer run. My opinion of Jack 93.1 is that it pretty much sucks. Indie needs to back down the Clash and Ramones they play all the time, it reminds me of the way KROQ plays the Red Hot Chili Peppers & Linkin Park (this is where you change the channel if you have KROQ on).

Yeah, I agree completely about the "50 (alternative) songs from 1993-1996." It seems to be what 94.9 plays at least some of the time, and what KROQ plays all too often. I do enjoy KROQ's flashback lunch hour, though, and sometimes I'll wander over when Jonesy plays a song I'm not that into. Have you heard this new song KROQ is promoting, though? It's called Give It Up by Pepper. It's completely just a novelty crap song, but it's like the #1 requested song there.
I haven't listened to KCRW yet, so I can't give my opinion one way or the other. Actually, I'm not even sure where to listen to that. Is that an online station or if not, what's its call numbers?
I tried listening to Jack a few times this weekend just to be fair and I have to agree with you. It's like they're still playing classic rock from their last radio format, Arrow 93. I heard Led Zeppelin, John Mellencamp, and they were even playing Sophie B. Hawkins today. WTF?
As for the Clash and the Ramones, I happen to LOVE both bands and I think they're a vital part of what punk and what indie are. So both those facts combined lead to a very happy boy every time they play either band, particularly one of their rarer tracks. Also, I'd probably be annoyed if they just played Should I Stay or Should I Go and I Wanna Be Sedated every hour, but instead Indie is more likely to play Janie Jones or She's the One.

That is undefeatable. Why do you tell us things we know? If you are a spy then you would want to get information on and from us instead of giving it to us. What ever you do DO NOT let KROQ play Tegan & Sara this group will cease to exist if you steal our GOLDEN IDOLS! We will promote KROQ to no end...what ever you want just don't play Tegan & Sara!!

Post by MicheBel »

You OBVIOUSLY haven't read the updated list of songs that Halloran's playing on 94.9. He has at least half of these on his playlist, and the ones that aren't, he's got something better instead.

To say nothing of the great music Mr. Shovel programs on Indie. Please. KROQ! Gimme a break. When was the last time you BROKE something, like Indie does constantly? I ask you!

--Miche

PS--You've got "Hand that Feeds" listed twice, and Mars Volta's Widow was overplayed by Indie months ago. Sheesh, catch up, already!

Motley Crue on KROQ

Post by MicheBel »

LOL Glenn. You tell him.

Plus, there are seriously only two songs on that list that I haven't heard on either 94.9 or Indie, or both. Those would be that Pepper song that Kristee says is overplayed, and that Jack Johnson song.

I'd take Indie (and 94.9) any day. Sorry KROQ. You lose.

Miche:

You'd be better served by buying/playing your Subllime CD than listening to Pepper. I swear to sweet Jesus and all that is holy, the first time I heard that song, I thought that it was a lost Sublime track.

At least if you buy Sublime, his wife and kid will get the money as compared to some knock off buncha wannabes.
