Death Cab for Cutie: "Soul Meets Body"
genre: rock

For anyone wondering just how mainstream Death Cab can go, their new single offers one answer: poppy, but in a stuffy, pop-in-a-glass-case, "Losing My Religion", poking at the melody with a stick sort of way. Mandolin sounds merge with strummed guitars and Ben Gibbard's vocals, forcibly lower and less fey, through the nearly graceful build-up of the verses. The instrumental breakdown is a strange anti-climax, and when it returns, it turns out to be the song's weak chorus. When Gibbard sings the song title over pounding drums, back in his usual higher register, he finds his captivating moment, but it's too little and too late.

those guys are on both the front of Spin & Under the Radar this month.

I'm trying to learn the mandolin - thinking of maybe violen/fiddle also.

I hate it when people try to get all technical and intellectual with their music reviews. It blurs the line between "good" and "bad"... it's like politics... then you have to read it twice, then backwards and between the lines to figure out wether the writer thought it "sucked" or "rocked"! IF he's complaining about the way the song is assembled and the rythms in melody, then he's obviouly not a DC4C fan in the first place (and his opinion doesn't count) because that's just classic DC4C... I mean, the loss of any logical pattern, or bulid up leading to a release is signature, and that combined with Gibbards struggling voice (at times) is what makes them so lovely! Where is that article from?

Whoa, right as I opened this thread that very song came on the radio. How did you plan that, Tom?! :o Anyways, I think it's a decent song. Not that thrilled about it, but I'm sure it'll grow on me after a few listens.
