I wonder if we knew one another? I was best buddies with the boys from Shattered Faith. In fact, I saw them at the Galaxy back in October. Jerry Roach was just that. A COCKroach.

well, I eventually evolved more into the ska and mod scene. I wrote lyrics for a local group called The Jetz that played at the Nest and Radio City quite often and hung out with the Untouchables, Three O'Clock and little Suzie Hoffs of the Bangs . . . err Bangles. The big shows I remember at the Nest were Iggy Pop, the Motels and X. I know there were others that I was just too intoxicated to remember

Same, although Dicky, hmm, could be interesting. I hope he plays more music than talk though. I like to wake up to soothing punk rock rather than idiots giggling on the radio. I don't know about everyone else, but I am quite grumpy in the morning because I had to wake up!

Um, not throwing a personal insult at Mr. Lewis, but. . .

"the reason they don't back-announce songs is so kroq won't find out who it is!"?!?!?!?

WTF! Dude, that has to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard which leads me to believe that it just might be true. Where'd you hear this?

Finally, I think we need to call a moratorium on anyone on this list calling anyone else out on "not being a real indie fan." What is this, grade school? Hey, here's an idea, why don't we start teasing and ostracizing anyone who doesn't think EXACTLY the way that we do! And then we can be just like the stereotypical KROQ audience members that we love to slam . . . except we'll be cool when we do it.

We may not all be grown-ups here, but that doesn't mean we can't kinda act like adults, no?

Much love,

DR

indeed, that's what keeps me tuning in everyday . . . you never know what you're gonna hear. another of my recent favorites was just listening in on Jones and I think the guys from Tears for Fears talking football (soccer) for a whole segment, just sublime. of course, the day with Joey Ramone was magic. and the telling of the story behind the song "EMI" was so great that I had my kids listen to the replay in order to gain a true understanding of revolutionary music.

cheers and write me anytime,

...instead of Social D every hour, or the acoustic MTV unplugged-bullshit verion of Rape Me...or the Beastie Boys.... In alphabetical order, just checkin the first ten bands in my Itunes list, I have:

1. American Analog Set - any song
2. And You Will Know Them By the Trail of Dead - any song
3. And Also the Trees - any song
4. Apples in Stereo - any song
5. Autolux - "Sugarless"
6. ANYTHING - Bauhaus - any song
7. BECK - old stuff (more of it)
8. BLACK FLAG - more, more!
9. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - more of this band...
10. Blur - wtf doesn't Indie play this awesome band? (and I don't mean
just the "woohoo" song)....

Anyone care to add to this list? Maybe the Indie people will see and
take heed...I mean come on, if I hear "Reach for the Sky" one more
time I'm gonne PUKE....

on my way to work this morning around 8:30am indie played this song right before the vines ride with me.... the only lyrics i remember are: "look at him go, look at him go." now.... if indie had a playlist, i could just go check what played right before the vines.
but since they don't have a playlist i have to resort to this. well have a nice day everyone.

That might be Arcade Fire, "Neighborhood #3"...

The Yes.net playlist thing isn't comprehensive...I've noticed they don't list every song played, dunno why...but it's better than NOTHING. Listening, Indie?

Also, yes.net is not a full complete playlist, but most of the songs are there. Got a few messages this morning about it. yes.net can't find songs that are too new or have no label from what I heard.

yeah, i'm a punk hippie hybrid; punker in the late 70's early 80's, ramones, clash, devo, talking heads, etc... grew from that into psychedelia, and more... Most of the hippie "jamband" scene embraces punk music, even if the the love doesn't always go the other way! I was way happy to hear some Phish on the air last Sunday morning!

Mix it up, don't be afraid of music that is not "yours".... my favorites range from Dickies to Dead, Black Flag to Beatles, Morissey to moe., so take that! ;-)

Well, it's just that there are SO many BETTER Ramones tunes, ya know, like the first two albums' worth.

Heheh, I remember when Indie first played "Uncontrollable Urge"...I was driving and almost pogo'd out the sunroof ;-) First time I'd heard that one in like 20 years....

Indie is Entravision who have some small ties to Univision. They operate independantly though.

not too bad, but compare indie to KROQ and you will feel much better.

Here is KROQ corporate structure.

KROQ owned by Infinity Broadcasting
Infinity Owned by CBS
CBS owned by Viacom
Viacom are huge.. they own MTV, MTV2 & VHI + much much much more.

At the end of the day who cares who owns who. As long as they play cool music I'm cool with it.

Hi. I'm new and this is my first post. :)

I agree on the old Beasties thing. I'm a huge fan, and I don't particularly care for their new album. I was very disappointed with it. I get very happy though when I hear something like an instrumental from Ill Communication (my favorite album). Beasties are not solely rap, and they originally wanted to be punk. Give Paul's Boutique a listen and see if you still think they are just rap.

I also didn't think this station was tied down to any one genre of music. Saying "this is not a rap station" is kind of off. It's a "I'm the DJ, I like this music, so I'm gonna play it" station if anything. And thank God for that. I love that I can hear Ramones, then The Pretenders, then Beastie Boys, then Modest Mouse, all within 10 minutes. I like being introduced to new music and old music I haven't heard yet. Be thankful I'm not the DJ, I'd play The Cars as well and you all would hate me.

As for the morning show, Indie should take into account that not a lot of people enjoy getting up in the morning and going to work, school, etc. Talk is boring and makes you want to crawl right back into bed. When I'm sitting in traffic, I find music a lot more stimulating than talk. It passes the time quickly. (I'm one of those car singers.) I'm all up for a morning show, but may I suggest less talk, more rock? I enjoy the Jonesy show, but in the morning during the rebroadcasts, I just can't handle all the talking sometimes and pop in a CD instead.

By the way, I'm reading past messages and I have to ask, what's with all the people bashing each other in this group? You can discuss differences in opinions, but anyone saying they are a true fan and accusing someone of not being one is a little obsessive. Get help! It's just a radio station! :)

Peace yall

You know, you just gotta love a song called "Why Can't I Touch It?" ;-)

BTW, whoever came up with that yes.net site, bless you! All the songs are there!

Although I just realized that the webcast is time-delayed or something. Interesting. It's a few minutes behind the playlist.

And seriously, why can't I touch it? ;-) heh

Well, I don't agree with that. I miss actual DJs talking. That's one of the best things about the station. Pop in a CD on the Jonesy rebroadcast?!!! That's sacrilege. Harumph!

Does this mean I'm not a true fan now? I obviously feel strong enough about the station to join a Yahoo group on it. I just don't think it's worth people obsessing over trying to claim that if you don't agree with something, you aren't a true fan.

I said SOMETIMES I pop in a CD. It's a rebroadcast, I heard it at lunch, and if it's a particularly chatty show and I'm half-asleep on the 55, a CD will wake me up more than hearing the Gary Oldman interview for the eleventeenth time. Good interview? Yes. Gets me going in the morning? No.

So for my first post, I am already backlashed on. Nice message to send out, listeners. I was giving the Indie Street Team a try, but it looks as though the kids here would rather make the group a pissing contest. Adios Indie.

HEY! First off, it's Miche (aka Michelle). Second, I'm not a "grumpy gus". I'm a pretty positive person actually, and I already sent her an apology and asked her to come back. I feel bad that she got mad over an offhand remark like that. Sheesh. Everyone lighten up! Man.

Listening to INDIE's competition

So, yeah, I admit it. I finally found the online site for the original "alternative gold" music, and am now listening to that. Well, Jonesy, of course, first (12-2). But from 2-6 pm 94.9 in San Diego has Halloran, who is, quite simply the best DJ in the entire world, so, sorry TK. My allegiance is split now. I think I should be shot at dawn or something.

I wish someone would invent a Media Player which allowed you to have multiple stations to flip back and forth between. :-(

The cool thing about 94.9 is that instead of playing commercials on the web feed, they teach you Spanish. The first phrase I heard today was "Can I buy a beer?" I mean, seriously, how cool is that? (Well, not that I'm going to use that phrase anytime soon, but it's a tres cool idea.)

Rock on 94.9. Wish they had a Yahoo Group too! heh

Best site I've found so far is http://www.somafm.com . Check out the "indie pop rocks" channel...now THAT is music Indie 103 should be playing!

Hey, does anyone know what the song is that played between 2:37PM and 2:46 today is called? It sounds like karma police by radiohead but a different version and sounds much older.

Ok, somebody suggested this and within hearing the first 10 seconds of the first song that was on I'm immediately heading out the door to buy the album by this band called BROADCAST!

Get a blender and throw in Stereolab, The Cardigans, Annette Funicello and My Bloody Valentine and you get BROADCAST.

GOD, I SO LOVE UNDERGROUND MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the SomaFM tip!

i love 94.9 and sometimes get it on my radio here in orange county. just depends on the weather...

the nice thing is, most of my family is in san diego so whenever i'm down there, you know i'm listening to 94.9. they play pretty much the same kind of music as indie, though they sometimes lapse into some of the crap kroq plays (which indie does too sometimes, no biggie....for example, i loathe nirvana and indie plays them way too much. just my opinion) but it's not a big deal.

i wouldn't say they're really competition since they're two different regions. if anything, i consider them sister stations because as 94.9's slogan goes, "it's about the music."

rock on indie AND 94.9

i didn't hear it, but i have a feeling you're referring to the "mash-up" of radiohead's karma police and the beatles a day in the life....

did it sound like john lennon singing? although i have a feeling you're pretty young 'cause i can't imagine someone out of their teens not recognizing john lennon's voice...no offense :)

Hey, I listen to John Lennon!! (I'm only 22, little less than halfway to being 50 and bald). It probably is a mashup of karma police and the beatles like how they mashed up green day and emenim.

My guess is that you heard "Karma In The Life" - which is a mash-up of "Karma Police" & the Beatles "A Day In The Life". Indie plays it from time to time.

Yeah, you're right. Not competition, compatriots. The music is all that matters, after all. ;-)

I'm glad both stations are here. Wish everyone played music like they play. Most of all, am glad I can listen to both of them on the web. (Radio, forget it about it. San Diego's too far away. Indie's static is bad enough.)

And that yes.net thing has really come in handy. I have both of them plugged in there too, so I can hear who's playing what, to know which to switch to. Problem is, that on both stations, the best songs don't come up on yes.net. "Dead Man's Party," for example, on 94.9. Great choice. As usual.

Ah well, we work around technology. Since I spend more time on my computer than in my car anyway, it's all good.

I was so happy when Indie popped up on the air. The first time I tuned in, "Raw Power" was playing and I jumped for joy. I was starting to discover Iggy Pop on my own and here's a radio station that plays him daily! Very cool.

Keep it going!

i love indie dudes. no seriously. everclear riht now. lovin it. just lovin it indie has gotta make some kinda cd...ya know ...for when ppl like me go out of state like to arizona where they dont have indie and go into depressions for lack of jonesy..
yeayeayea i know its on the internet worldwide but not everybodys got the internet we should make a cd. us that would be so "indie" ((please dont kill me ^^;))
everybody by an album that play , likeoff the playlist form the website and get together and burn a couple mix cds then distribute them the ppl that bought the albums to help get em for free but we could take our burn copys and burn more and sell those and give u the money to indie. cosplayers have their picnics, we can get together adn burn a mix. good idea bad idea?

also, what EXACTLY is indie? or is it anything at all? i kepttryin to explain to my family in arizona what the heck indie is and why i missed it so much ((curse those technophobe fools!)) and couldt come up with much. indie is love, thas about it aint it...

I hope all of indie's listeners are there when they unveil Johnny's statue. He was important to Punk Rock and if you can make it there, you should. If Johnny was never on this planet, we would all still be listening to crap music!

It will be at the Hollywood Forever Cemetary on Santa Monica Blvd.

Has anybody seen the video for this song? It is rather satanic. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Love the song, the vid is unique. And Jonesy played a version of Life on Mars yesterday that was stunning.

I was driving down to San Clemente last night and out of range for 103.1. so I turned to 94.9 just in time to hear this fantastic song from the Futurehead, "Decent Days and Nights" F***ing incredible, fantastic songwriting and performance. There's definitely much more to this band than the Kate Bush cover currently played on 103.1.
Let's get more played from these guys. Go Sunderland!

I got you beat, Queenie. I listen to Jonesy when it airs AND in both rebroadcasts. ;-)

But I think compulsively listening to great music is a good thing.

God, I love Jonesy. Somehow, the Boston song of yesterday and these trippy two-bob songs of today balance out, in a very weird way.

Rock on, Two-Bob Jonesy! :-)

Does any one know the song to that Vonage commercial? That song is everywhere. I also heard it on a Chevy commercial and the upcoming movie "charlie and the chocolate factory." I can't get it out of my head. There's no word, which makes it really hard to forget.

I think that would be the Woohoo song by the 5,6,7,8s. However, the one in the commercial is modified. They were also in Kill Bill Vol. 1. Great band, saw them live on new years.

Umm, saying there is no support for java and flash in Unix systems is rather incorrect. Both companies provide unix versions of their products, except that Macromedia doesn't have a shockwave plugin for unix systems. I've used quite a few linux distros where Java works fine, while using FireFox, konquerer, etc. The lastest Linux distro
I'm using is Mepis and both flash and java are working. I also code in Java on a linux system!
I know it's also possible for FreeBSD. If you're having trouble check here: http://www.freebsdforums.org

Boy, I'm sure hoping this slogan sticks. Now THAT would take some balls, indeed.

But with all the testosterone-laden guys over there, I'm pretty sure it's not inaccurate.

Long Live Indie, our favorite Cock of Rock! ;-)

Oh yeah, if there are censors in here, we were talking about a ROOSTER, of course. There's this commercial....honest...a ROOSTER, that's it.

It's possible to get java to work on FreeBSD, that part works fine, its the java plugin for web browsers that doesn't work because there is no UNIX port. Same with macromedia. UNIX and linux are very different.

But really, Kristee, that "rooster" thing came from a promo spot they ran this morning. Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, riffing about Indie's "mascot". Seriously. I wasn't making it up.

I JUST ENDORSE IT WHOLEHEARTEDLY, as it's soooooo fitting for these boys.
