Good try babycakes...Glenn wrote:Admit it Aida. The fact that you are the most unlikely suspect makes you the prime suspect.
Trying to lie your way out of this is like a broken pencil...pointless.

une pipe
Um, Magritte, darling. And it's an actual painting.gidgetgoestohell wrote:Ce n'est pas une pipe is actually Picasso...or was it George Braque? Anyway, it was from a collage on some type of waxed butcher's paper, if I remember correctly....
However, it is primarily known for the firestorm of criticism and discussion that ensued about it. An essential element of the Dadaist movement.
However, the reality is: it's not a pipe or not NOT a pipe. It's a painting. heh

That line was also used in a cubist collage by either Braque (I can never spell that correctly) or Picasso. For a period of time they worked together. It was written in black coal on teh corner of the waxed paper. Maybe the dadaist stole the phrase from the cubists?? All I know is that I actually always preferred the fauves.....
I understand the meaning of the phrase as well as Magritte's work. Little men with umbrellas and bowler hats falling from the sky.
I always associate Dada with that one picture by Marcel Duchamp..called Nude Descending a Staircase, anyway, I always associate that movement with a German aesthetic.....even though it essentially means NOTHING.....

I love you. And I can't believe we are having this conversation in Jack's Shack.
No one appreciates how amazing you are. (Except maybe Dicky...) heh

I had to edit that last post because everytime I submitted, I remembered the name of the artist and the painting, DOH.
I actually didn't understand that I had an artsy fartsy side to myself until college. This is one reason in particular and a great example of why college is such a great experience. It rounds you out as a person.
As far as Dicky goes, who knows? LOL

Just a FYI....
In 1909, Braque began to work with Pablo Picasso . They both began to use neutral colors and complex geometric patterns. This style of art is now called analytic cubism. Between 1910 and 1912, Braque began to use a collage. Collage is when an artist take things from everyday life like newspapers, fabric, rope, etc... and uses them is his art.

fyi
I am going to assume that that was for the general masses, and not me. I'd really hate anyone to think I was stupid and didn't know that... (cause I did).
And btw, I also do collages.

I also love that you girls are discussing this at the moment!!!!!
Magritte might just be my all time favorite visual artist. I'm very fascinated by both dadaism and cubism.... anything circa Surrealism and all the isms! I think of Duchamp's Nude Descending... too Gidge, but also of Fountain when I think of Dada.... because it is credited as marking the begining of Dada.
Now should we move on to Dali?

Aw, although I did know that.... I don't know half as much as I would hope to about Art History.... I don't think it makes someone stupid not knowing that...

Hey, I'm just happy that we can come in here and discuss other things than music, and not have someone tear our heads off!
